I am Stuart Jacques Marais, born 10 May 1985 in the Eastern Cape. This is where I found my love for sport, on the farm in Addo with dad Scube as my coach. No fancy shoes, tracks or detailed training programs – barefoot, gravel roads and Scube’s thumb suck programs that kept my hunger for running alive!
Matriculated at Grey High in Port Elizabeth and headed off to the beautiful town in the Boland – Stellenbosch. Little knowing that this would be a longer-term destination than planned.
During my studies at Elsenburg I fitted the description of a student more than that of an athlete! With 12kgs above “race-weight” after my student endeavours, I wanted to rekindle my love for sport. I managed a bike shop for 3 years and rode my bike….a lot. No social life, just worked and trained.
One of the good things that resulted from the bike shop, was meeting my gorgeous wife who brought her bike in for a service. Two years later, we got married and our handsome boy was born early 2013. She encouraged me to take the brave jump to a professional athlete and I never looked back. I absolutely love exploiting the talent God gave me and getting better as the years tick by.
These days, I find myself living in a little cottage in Jonkershoek, still training my heart out. Life truly is bliss.
